Church Key

Why are these bottle openers called Church Keys?

Also, the tornado siren is going off again. I'm not even lying.

Stuck in my head: "Wizards of Winter" by TSO.

I know I know!

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, beer cans did not have pulltabs, and twist-off bottle caps had not yet been thought of, so if one wished to imbibe, he had to have a "beer opener" handy. Thus it was not uncommon to see them on people's keychains, in which case you could be fairly certain that the owner was quite devoted to beer, dontchasee. As you might imagine, good church folks would never have a beer opener on their keychains -- for shame! So, quite often, the owner of the keychain beer opener would joke that it was actually "the church key."

And now you know.
